Alright, so picture this – I'm on chill, minding my own business, when out of the blue, Penn State hits me up. Now, I'm thinking, "What's the deal? Did they finally realize they owe me a refund for those overpriced biology textbooks?" But nope, turns out the Dean of the College of Science want to chat with yours truly. And guess what? Your boy's getting an Outstanding Alumni Award for 2024. Yeah, you heard that right – I'm practically a legend now (jokes).
So, there I am, feeling all humbled and reflective, like I'm in some kind of deep existential crisis. It's like one of those moments where you're hit with a wave of nostalgia and you're like, "Damn, I really came a long way from eating Gumby’s pizza in my dorm room at 3 AM."
Fast forward to the actual award ceremony in the spring – talk about a trip down memory lane. It was like stepping back into freshman year, except this time, I'm not stressing about a biochemistry final or trying to figure out where my next meal is coming from. Nah, this is a whole different vibe – it's like a reunion with my past self, sans the dreadlocks but complete with Starbucks on every corner and students zipping around on scooters like they're auditioning for the next Fast and Furious movie.
And let me tell you, chatting with the current leaders of the Black Caucus? It was like déjà vu all over again. These young sisters and brothers are tight, holding it down in the classroom and on the front lines of student activism. But you know what hasn't changed? The struggle. It's the same old same old – everyone's down to turn up at the next party, but when it comes to supporting real change, suddenly it's crickets…. Until it’s time to rock your kente cloth at black graduation.
But hey, here's the silver lining – even though history loves to repeat itself, we've got all the power to break the cycle. It's all about growth, learning from our mistakes, and surrounding ourselves with solid people who've got our backs. So yeah, maybe we can't turn back time, but we can definitely make better choices and be grateful to have the wisdom to put in the kind of work that matches a more powerful purpose.
A good book says “iron sharpens iron”… you are who you surround yourself with… and I’m proud to say I have a number of Iron Lions from Penn State and beyond who hold me down to this day. I am because WE are!

Our adventure to Philadelphia kicked off in the classic scramble of racing against the clock, embodying what I'd generously describe as "fashionably late" to the airport. I'm part of that peculiar breed who finds solace in relaxing in exclusive lounges, leisurely making my way to the gate as boarding commences. Ali, on the other hand, operates on a different wavelength. We snagged our parking spot a nail-biting 58 minutes before our flight's departure—still facing the gauntlet of a shuttle ride, security pat-downs, a terminal-to-terminal marathon, and the sprint to board before our seats decided to abandon us for more punctual passengers. Shockingly, we were the first to board. I took a moment to let my body temperature return from its volcanic eruption to a serene, tropical breeze, practicing some cleansing breaths to melt away the pre-flight frenzy. Supporting Rashid as he received his award was a beacon of excitement, marking this trip with the promise of new experiences.
Mid-flight, my mind wandered back to our initial voyage to Philly, only three months into our budding relationship. Everything was fresh, filled with the nervous excitement of new love and the looming question of "Are we moving too fast?" Our plans back then were as solid as sandcastles at high tide—culminating in a birthday celebration marooned in an airport. Yet, it was Rashid who steered our ship through the storm. He orchestrated a plan B with the precision of a seasoned general—securing a new hotel, salvaging our comedy show & concert plans, and ensuring my birthday wasn't lost to the travel gods. Despite the universe's best efforts to reroute our celebration, we ended up embracing the chaos, leading to an unexpectedly perfect belated birthday weekend.
Fast forward to the present trip, and it's déjà vu with a twist. The same airport lounges, the same car rental routine (wisely sans promotion this time), the same Philadelphia skyline, but with a shifted purpose—to celebrate Ali with a side trip to state college instead of Atlantic City. Being honored guests at Penn State made our schedule seem like a full-blown press tour, an immersive dive into the world that shaped him, surrounded by those who knew him before he became the person I know today. Witnessing his evolution firsthand, through the eyes of his past, was nothing short of extraordinary.
As our journey concluded, the lessons from our first Philly escapade echoed, shaping this experience into something smoother, richer. It's funny how life operates in these circular patterns, each loop back not quite the same as before.
We live, we experience, we stumble, and, most importantly, we grow.
